We Are the World - The Story Behind the Song (20th Anniversary Special Edition) As you know, Michael co-wrote the song, We are the World, with Lionel Richie (perhaps better known to newer generations as "Nicole's dad!"). The Jackson family played a large part in the production of the song, as sister La Toya and brothers Randy, Marlon, and Tito all sang in the chorus, and Michael sang solo. The recording took place in January 1985, kinda in secret, after that night's American Music Awards. |

Originally titled MOTOWN ON SHOWTIME: MICHAEL JACKSON as a special for the Showtime cable channel in the late 1980s, it's a cross between (and pre-cursor to) the A&E "Biography" and VH1 "Behind the Music" shows. Narrated by James Earl Jones, the show features many great and legendary stars all talking about Michael -- including some who are no longer with us, such as Gene Kelly, Gregory Peck, and Katharine Hepburn. There are several rarely-seen TV clips of the Jackson Five performing. | |
On this tape is the legendary 1983 performance of "Billie Jean" that showed everybody that Michael could no longer be considered just an older child star, but was without question an adult performer who would not be denied true stardom any longer. It may be lip-synced, but it was after this performance that sales for "Thriller" went through the stratosphere!! But before Michael sings "Billie Jean," there's a reunion of the Jackson Five -- as well as of the "Jackson Six" when Randy comes out to perform! |

Finally (!) I've remembered to add the 1992 ABC-TV miniseries about the Jackson family! It stars Angela Bassett as mother Katherine Jackson, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs (an actor thoroughly undervalued in Hollywood, by the way!) as father Joseph Jackson, Vanessa Williams as Motown superwoman Suzanne De Passe, and, in the most outrageous stunt casting of all, Billy Dee Williams as Berry Gordy!
|
OK, I haven't seen this DVD or had even heard of it until I spotted it at a store, but it looks like it should be good--! It seems to be a TV special on the Jackson family that Marlon put together for airing on his MBC Network. Included among the performance clips is an interview with the brothers (except Michael) conducted by Marlon's daughter, Valencia (who's trying to break into the TV business; in 2003, she was on ABC's The View morning show for a week's tryout).
|
Bette Midler would later joke, deadpan, on her comedy record, Mud Will Be Flung Tonight, of the experience: "I stood next to La Toya. She wore a headband. I felt naked--!" |
