We Are the World - The Story Behind the Song (20th Anniversary Special Edition) As you know, Michael co-wrote the song, We are the World,
with Lionel Richie (perhaps better known to newer generations as
"Nicole's dad!"). The Jackson family played a large part in
the production of the song, as sister La Toya and brothers Randy,
Marlon, and Tito all sang in the chorus, and Michael sang solo. The
recording took place in January 1985, kinda in secret, after that
night's American Music Awards.
Bette Midler would later
joke, deadpan, on her comedy record, Mud
Will Be Flung Tonight, of the experience: "I stood next to La
Toya. She wore a headband. I felt naked--!"
